The canonical clinician:
Understanding the life and work of Zhang Zhongjing

Zhang Zhongjing is the Eastern Han dynasty author of the Shanghan Zabing Lun commonly referred
to as the Treatise on Cold Damage and Complex Disorders. This work is the first and foremost manual
and standard in Chinese herbal medicine and is since centuries praised as the forefather of all formula
But little is know about the author and his life. When examining the last centuries preceding the
authoring of the Shanghan Lun, it becomes evident that no extant book even loosely approximates the
advanced detail that can be found in Zhang Zhongjing’s writings. So where did this knowledge
suddenly come from? What did he study, and for how long? Where did he live? When did he write this
book and why? Is he part of a lineage? And what is the construct of his theoretical and clinical
mindset? Questions such as these are of pivotal importance to the serious scholar-practitioner trying
to study and practice Zhang Zhongjing’s style of canonical clinical medicine.
During this afternoon workshop, Dr. Versluys will share his research into this topic and present some
answers to the aforementioned questions. The student will be introduced to Zhang Zhongjing as a
man, scholar and physician. The nature of the Shanghan Lun will be examined to unveil the author’s
motivations and objectives. And a window will open offering glimpse into the life of one of history’s
greatest physicians to instill the student of the Zhongjing-style of Chinese medicine with a visceral
sense of lineage.
